Mission and Vision
The IJOEM is a peer-reviewed quarterly publication which will publish articles relevant to epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and management of occupational and environmental diseases. It will also cover work-related injury and illness, accident and illness prevention, health promotion, health education, the establishment and implementation of health and safety standards, monitoring of the work environment, and the management of recognized hazards. Our journal is open access but will not charge authors for publication and have a rapid peer review system. Color photos, when necessary, will be published at no charges.
Peer Review Process
The submitted manuscript is first reviewed by an internal reviewer. It is rejected in office for several reasons: if the presented topic is not relevant to the journal scope, lack of a clear statement on the research question or hypothesis, lack of obtaining ethical clearance from an institutional review board, lack of registration of submitted clinical trials in accepted trial registries, plagiarism, redundant publication, major methodological flaws, and lack of priority for publication compared to other submissions. Almost one-third of submitted manuscripts are rejected in office. Those manuscripts that pass this step are sent to two external reviewers who are aware of the identity of authors (single-blind review system). If the manuscript involves complex data or statistical methods, it is also sent to a statistical advisor. Reviewers’ comments are then summarized and sent to the corresponding author to take the necessary actions and responses. The revised manuscript will then be evaluated by the hanging committee members, the final decision of whom are sent to the corresponding author.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
The IJOEM utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
Editorial Freedom at The IJOEM
The IJOEM is an international peer-reviewed journal which will publish articles relevant to epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and management of occupational and environmental diseases. It will also cover work-related injury and illness, accident and illness prevention, health promotion, health education, the establishment and implementation of health and safety standards, monitoring of the work environment, and the management of recognized hazards. The IJOEM adheres to the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) Policy on “The Relationship between Journal Editors-in-Chief and Owners.” More specifically, the Editor-in-Chief has editorial independence and as such has full authority over the journal’s editorial content including how and when information is published. Editorial decisions are based solely on the validity of the work and its importance to readers, not on the policies or commercial interests of the owner.
The IJOEM is the official journal of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) Health Organization. The NIOC Health Organization—established as an independent entity—provides health and medical services to the population, including to NIOC employees and their families. Neither the NIOC nor the NIOC Health Organization interferes in the evaluation, selection or editing of individual articles, either directly or by creating an environment in which editorial decisions are strongly influenced.
Guidelines for Filing a Competing Interest Statement
Definition: Conflict of interest (COI) exists when there is a divergence between an individual’s private interests (competing interests) and his or her responsibilities to scientific and publishing activities such that a reasonable observer might wonder if the individual’s behavior or judgment was motivated by considerations of his or her competing interests. COI in medical publishing affects everyone with a stake in research integrity including journals, research/academic institutions, funding agencies, the popular media, and the public.
COI may exist in numerous forms including financial ties, academic commitments, personal relationships, political or religious beliefs, and institutional affiliations. In managing COI, The IJOEM abides to the policy statement of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). All authors should declare their COI, if any, during the manuscript submission. Reviewers are asked to declare their COI after they accept to review a manuscript. Editors should also declare their COI during handling of a manuscript.
Managing COI depends on disclosure because it is not possible to routinely monitor or investigate whether competing interests are present. COI disclosed by authors will be presented in the Editorial Board and an appropriate action will be taken. Those reviewers and Editors with COI will be excluded from the manuscript process. If competing interests surface from other sources after a manuscript is submitted or published, The IJOEM investigates allegations of COI and depending on their nature, appropriate actions will be taken if the allegations were found to be true. If a manuscript has been published and COI surfaces later, the journal will publish the results of the investigation as a correction to the article and ask the author to explain, in a published letter, why the COI was not revealed earlier.
Disposal of Material
Once published, all copies of the manuscript, correspondence and artwork will be held for at least one year before disposal.
